Abstract
A recent review has suggested the long standin3 periodic occurrence of Japanese encephalitis in Korea. (1) (3) Whereas the disease has been recognizes in Japan since 1924 with outbreaks reaching major epidemic proportions in 1924, 1935 and 1948 similar epidemic cycles have probably occurred in Korea it 1924, 1934, 1939and 1949.
In 1946, just the year after liberation four case, of Japanese encephalitis occured in American soldiers, one fatal case being proven by virus isolation, the others serologically (1). This was the first that the Japanese encephalitis virus isolated by Sabin from the human cases in Korea.
During August and September 1949 a severe epidemic resulted in 5; 548 cases (1,283 in Seoul) with 2.429 reported deaths, and was identified as being due to Japanese encephalitis virus (2) (3).
Since that time, every Summer season there has been epidemic of Japanese encephalitis and major epidemic occurred regularly every three years interval in Korea. This is still one of the unknown factor and very interesting about the epidemic cycle in the endemic area.
We already had reported the results of a study of ernagglutination inhibition antibody against Japanese encephalitis in the sera of Korean population before epedemic season on 1956 (4).
This paper presents the results of further serum survey on sera of human with a large scale and additional animals and wild birds on before and after epidemic season(April to October)) by means of hemagglutination . inhibition technic.
The serum specimens collection were the Ronsan where the ¢¥most endemic area in Korea, Seoul city as a u urban areas and the Wonju as a rural area.
Total serum specimens we collected were more than three thousands(table A) and used virus strain was the Nakayama strain for the preparation of the H -1 antigen.
